I knew, of course, that MIT students got to pick where they lived, more or less. I thought that was cool. But I didnt have any way of knowing what it meant for me, or what it would come to mean to me. I was always sort of a rootless kid. Im a jumble of ethnicities, none of which has a prominent role in my psyche. I enjoyed or didnt enjoy the grade schools I was in to varying degrees, but I never felt entrenched in them maybe high school a little bit, but only to the degree that I wouldnt have wanted to switch high schools, since leaving it at graduation was pretty painless. My family doesnt have roots anywhere weve lived (my stepdad and stepbrother have, but not the rest of us), like some people do, with many generations living in the same place and it becoming a part of ones identity. I love my neighborhood back in Kentucky, and its culture, but not in the sense of knowing much about its history or being part of any sort of tradition within it, except maybe the politically-liberal-in-a-red-state part. Its probably the closest thing I had to really being part of a culture, but its not quite there. How strange that I came to college, of all places, to find a cultural identity, and a cultural heritage. It wasnt something I did purposefully, or expected to happen. But when I came here, I ended up on 5th East, a place with a decades-old culture that is itself part of the larger twinkie/hacker/builder/destroyer/geek culture that encompasses the connecting and overlapping social circles of many halls of East Campus, Random Hall, Senior Haus, a couple of FSILGs, and scattered others. Some hear me talk about the cruft (socially involved alums), and think its abnormal that people who have already graduated would hang out with college kids. I dont think its abnormal. My reply to those people is, do your parents, or the other adults you know, not have friends who are more than a couple of years younger or older than them? My dad plays trivia with a group of buddies who range from their early 30s to around 60. How is it any weirder that some of my friends are in their late 20s, or even their 30s? Or that theyd want to hang out with us after coming home from work or lab, or invite us to their houses to hang out? They have plenty in common, interest-wise and personality-wise, with us, and where but in the MIT community are they going to be able to LARP (or a regular basis, not just at Cons) or act in amateur musical theater shows or write Linux tools for fun or whatever it is thats unusual that they do? I think its the normal case thats more disturbing. You go to college, supposedly become part of this campus community that administrators everywhere harp on, and then four years later you just leave and its never part of your life again and the people who come after you have no sense of what happened before they came? The other day, one of our new freshmen was moving into her room, which happened to be a room with a history and not only that, but evidence of that history on the walls. The story is bizarre and not terribly positive, but its interesting and lots of people who are still around remember it. I told her the story as she moved in, and she was really interested, and thought it was cool that there was significance and history in her room. A lot of the rooms on hall contain history, history thats passed on through stories. People sit around in the hall and tell stories, or they sit around in a cruft house in Somerville and tell stories, and its Oh yeah, so-and-so started [moderately famous company] on his computer in that room and So-and-so lived in that room when he went crazy and [famous tragedy] happened there and Parts of Kerberos were developed in that lounge and [famous hack] was built in that room and [bizarre stuff-of-legends social politics event] happened there. I know my room has at least one interesting back-in-the-day story connected with it, and probably others. Storytelling is a great tradition here, and its a major way that cultural heritage is offered and received. Theres old half-true legends that get told to freshmen by people who were little kids, if that, when the events that inspired them actually happened. Theres the more personal stories that happened to the storytellers or people they knew. No matter what sort they are, theres stories. And the neat thing is, the repertoire of stories isnt static. Because the current students create new stories all the time. There are new charismatic personalities, new hacks, new budding entrepreneurs, new feuds, new triumphs and tragedies. I can listen to cruft tell stories for hours, but sometimes Im the one telling them the storiesor telling the stories, old and new, to younger students. I like knowing that Im making new stories, new parts of the history. It reinforces the good feelings that come with success and achievement. And it helps you get through rough times knowing that, even if theres no other good to come from them, at least theyll make good stories someday. The cultural identity, the cultural heritage, that I have here is a major motive for my work in student government. I was never a student government person in grade school, now Im a major figure. As I write this, Im listening to the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack. So is that all it takes then? Focus, work hard and then win an Olympic medal, or achieve some other amazing feat? What kind of role does effort actually play in a person’s success? This was the question that Psychology Professor Angela Duckworth wanted to find the answer to when she was teaching Math in middle school and high school. For a long time, IQ was considered the number one ingredient for success. However, as I have also mentioned in a previous piece, this is no longer the case. According to Duckworth, grit may be just as important. She defines this personality trait as: â€Å"sticking with things over the very long term until you master them.† When Duckworth studied a number of Ivy League students, she found that smarter students actually had less grit than their peers who had scored lower on an intelligence test. Nevertheless, the â€Å"grittiest† students had the highest GPA; they compensate for their lower test scores by working harder and with more determination. And just to clarify: grit and high IQ are not necessarily trade-offs (of course, a person can be exceptionally smart and gritty at the same time). Believe it or not, the study of grit is part of an emerging area of psychology research focused on what’s currently called â€Å"non-cognitive skills†, which include motivation, adaptability and self-control, among other things. The aim of this research is to identify and measure these skills, which play a vital role, apart from intelligence, in human development and success. And make sure you understand this: grit and self-discipline are not interchangeable terms. Grit, on the other hand, is what comes into play when you want to be successful in a highly challenging environment; an environment where you have to step out of your comfort zone to identify your weaknesses. And we all know that getting out of your comfort zone can increase the risk of failure, so it’s easier said than done. But hey, failure is good for you! I just can’t emphasize that enough. Typically, a person isnt going to admit to being prejudice against another, but with the constant conflict portrayed in the media, it is evident this problem still exists. As stated in the literature, discrimination is unequal treatment because of gender, race, ethnicity, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or other diverse human traits. (Farley pp.199) While it is a social norm to have differences among classes, religions, demographics, etc., discrimination is widely intolerable. A person who doesnt understand another or is simply fearful of what they will likely resort to some sort of discrimination as a defense. Almost as if to say, if they arent like me they must be wrong. The group, Students for Fair Admissions, brought the claim again st Harvard stating that they were sending recruitment letters to students based on PSAT scores earned. According to school policy, Asian-American males living in rural stated need to score 1370 on the PSAT to get a letter. White males, however, only need 1310. (Jung, 2018) The attorney representing the group argues this is race discrimination at its finest. While the Dean of Harvard remains firm that this is a tactic the college uses to attract people in rural areas who historically may not have considered the school and that those standards are not used once students enter the applicant pool. (Jung, 2018) This comment would lead one to believe that each student is given a fair opportunity during the admission process and all race-related info would be irrelevant. Multiple students testified during the trial and all of them praised Harvard for the diversity it offers. Many students were upset that race-blind admissions was a possible proposal. One witness stated, To not see my race is to not see me. It is common knowledge that people from different races and cultures live among one another, and it helps define who they are. If we were to remove that factor in admissions and other application processes it would make each persons uniqueness obsolete. People enjoy being identified for their accomplishments, but also for their backgrounds and where they came from. This is especially true with impoverished societies that have worked their way to success. If students do not meet a schools academic requirements, they should not be admitted just because of their race. Schools are for educating students, not for deciding which race is worthy of admission. It is nice to have a diverse population, but it should be done fairly and only those who are acade mically adept should be granted acceptance. Currently, in the news, there is controversy with the LGBT community and President Trump. The current laws in place do not provide enough protection for the LGBT community from workplace discrimination. It is their stance that there needs to be action taken to resolve this. Either the supreme court or Congress has the ability to rectify this issue. As society changes, laws and standards should change too, but unfortunately, it does not happen this way. Whether or not we agree with a person being gay, transgender, lesbian, or bisexual, they are still a human and should be treated with the same dignity and respect as someone who is straight. It is no ones place to determine what kind of treatment another human should receive based on their sexual orientation. As mentioned previously, I dont think there is enough energy around educating people about other peoples lifestyles. I have a friend, who I also work with, and her name is Alicia. She and her partner used a sperm donor to get pregnant and her partner carried the baby. The plan was for Alicia to work while her partner spent 12 weeks on maternity leave with the baby. Then it would be Alicias turn to take the same amount of time off. Because this was the first time their employer dealt with this scenario, Alicia had to jump through hoops and endure a lengthy and complicated process. Alicia worked at this company for over 15 years and they required her to go back and show proof of t his. She was also required to obtain health history documentation. The rationale as to why they needed this documentation was as clear as mud. In addition, she had to complete extensive amounts of paperwork for the company. Meanwhile, she was also going through the process to adopt her child, which is also very laborious. Had Alicia and her partner been a man and woman in a heterogenous relationship, I am certain these issued would not have materialized. There was no intentional discrimination, and typically institution discrimination isnt, but the difference in treatment from one person to the next speaks volumes. Alicia did get to spend the time off with her daughter and all was well in the end. My point here is that there never should have been a need to prove her work history and complete unnecessary documentation. Having a child should be a happy experience for both gay and straight parents, not a dreadful one. As unfortunate as it is, we see discrimination happening too frequently. For decades societies have been battling discrimination and it isnt getting any better. A person could potentially land themselves in jail for discriminating against another. In the United States, most discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion or disability is illegal. (Farley pp.199) Educating people may not change what they believe but it will certainly put things into a different perspective allowing open minds to accept our ever-evolving society.
